Arts in Motion
For a new arts strand, BBC News TV is releasing a series entitled Arts in Motion, in which figures from the arts such as Brian Cox, Antony Gormley and Benjamin Bernheim work with aspiring artists in their fields. A recently-shown episode features Steven giving a class to three young students from the Royal Academy of Music in London, playing the music of Dvorak, Schumann and Franck. You can see it here (those outside the UK may need a VPN in order to view it.) A trailer was released earlier on the BBC’s YouTube Reels channel.
Drawing from his own career, Steven teaches that being a cellist is about more than technique – it’s about telling the story of the music. He works with the students on how to bring pieces by Dvořák and Schumann to life, showing them how to convey the emotional and narrative depth embedded in these works.
Steven encourages them to listen deeply, not only to the notes but also to the stories the music is telling, and to bring that understanding to their performance.
